Early last week I was asked to carry out a valuation on a premises in Waterford’s Cultural Quarter and I was delighted to witness first hand the transformation taking place in some of the City’s oldest buildings mainly due to the Living City Initiative. The Living City Initiative focuses on the regeneration of retail and commercial districts, encouraging people to live in the historic centres of Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick and Waterford. The aim of the Living City initiative is to bring life back into the heart of the relevant cities by offering tax relief for qualifying expenditure incurred on the refurbishment or conversion of certain buildings where conditions are met. This initiative will be extended in its present form until 31 December 2022

Waterford Cultural Quarter is a project currently being managed by Waterford City & County Council. It is commissioned by Waterford City and County Council (WCCC) with a view to exploring the potential for a WCQ which will play a transformative role for this district of the city, for the capacity, confidence and sustainable growth of the cultural and creative sectors of the city and region and for the inclusion of the communities who live in the area. Continuing the theme of regeneration and change, best of luck to Sarah Jane Hanton and her team who have recently taken over the famous Thomas Mahers Establishment on O’Connell Street. Thomas Mahers was famous not only for an excellent pint of stout but for running a ‘men only’ establishment. The publican was also known to advise customers to go home to their wives with their wages, and he often refused to serve a customer when they had more than a few drinks. So its great now to see it the hands of a dynamic young lady.
